Why explore the Dordogne in a motorhome?
- People travel through the Dordogne in a motorhome to explore its rich heritage, particularly its architectural heritage. We’re talking, of course, about the “Land of a Thousand and One Castles” in the Dordogne. Perched atop their promontories, amidst dense forests, these structures are an integral part of the landscape and offer a glimpse into the region’s history. Some names are well known, notably the castles of Les Milandes, Castelnaud, Beynac, Montal, and Fénelon, which are must-see attractions for tourists in the Dordogne.
- Visitors are also interested in the Dordogne’s many prehistoric sites. The Fieux Archaeological Site in Miers, for example, is one of the places you definitely shouldn’t miss. Among other things, you can explore a stratified settlement dating from the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods. In addition, several activities are offered for families—and especially for children—such as fun, educational, and interactive workshops.
- Take advantage of your motorhome getaway in the Dordogne to explore its charming medieval towns. Some of them are listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France,” such as Curemonte and Collonges-la-Rouge. Most are fortified, having served as strongholds during the Hundred Years’ War.
- This adventure will also allow you to discover several major natural sites. The Dordogne, the Ouysse, the Cère, and others are rivers that all offer breathtaking scenery, as do the streams of the Ségala, the Causse, and the Xaintrie. Numerous hiking trails will delight families eager for walks in the great outdoors just as much as seasoned hikers looking to tackle the GR trails.
- Exploring the Dordogne in a motorhome also means being able to enjoy all kinds of activities, especially in the great outdoors. Among the activities available in the department are swimming, fishing (from a boat or at designated fishing spots), and trips on a gabare, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard, etc.
Wonderful landscapes
