Where is La Roque Gageac located?
La Roque-Gageac is a charming medieval town prized for the authenticity of its setting, with its brown roof tiles and traditional roofs. The village is a delight for those seeking a peaceful setting close to nature.
Spending a few days in the Périgord Noir region of the Dordogne at our Dordogne campground to explore the Dordogne and visit historic sites is a wonderful experience. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to make new discoveries, as this region is brimming with architectural gems, prehistoric sites, and medieval villages. La Roque-Gageac can serve as a starting point or a stopover during a getaway to explore the various historic towns of the Dordogne Valley, located just a few kilometers from our campground with a pool in the Dordogne.
Among the villages near La Roque-Gageac are Sarlat-la-Canéda (10.5 km), Castelnaud-la-Chapelle (6 km), Domme (6 km), Vezac (4 km), Beynac (5 km), and Souillac (32 km).
A village worth exploring
La Roque-Gageac: One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France
France has more than 150 villages with this designation. Ten of them are in the Dordogne department, including nine in the Périgord Noir. La Roque-Gageac is one of these gems near Val de la Marquise, a campground with a fishing pond in the Dordogne.
Inside the village, the scenery is quite typical of medieval towns in the Périgord region, featuring golden houses with slate or brown-tiled roofs. After strolling through the picturesque streets of La Roque-Gageac, treat yourself to a side trip to Beynac—where you absolutely must visit Beynac Castle—and to Castelnaud, whose castles offer exceptional panoramic views of the “Valley of the Five Castles .”
If you have time, continue your adventure by heading uphill toward Domme. This hilltop village is known for its ramparts and its Templar prison. Of course, it offers a beautiful panoramic view of the valley.
There are many other picturesque towns to discover in the surrounding area along the Dordogne River. These include Belvès, which overlooks the Nauze Valley, as well as Limeuil, Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère, and Saint-Amand-de-Coly.

Canoeing in La Roque-Gageac
La Roque-Gageac is located on the right bank of the Dordogne River. It’s the perfect setting for picnics, hikes, or canoe trips on the Dordogne.
Paddling down France’s most beautiful river in a canoe is a wonderful experience to share with children or friends in the Vézère Valley. Rental services offer vacationers two-, three-, or four-person canoes, as well as kayaks.
The various routes—whether 9, 16, or 25 kilometers long—allow you to discover the Dordogne’s most beautiful gems, particularly the castles ranked among the most beautiful in France.
