Discovery of the city of Sarlat-la-Canéda

The town of Sarlat was set up around an abbey that was consecrated in the Middle Ages under the patronage of Saint-Sacerdos. In 1317, thanks to Pope Cahors, Jean XXII, it became a diocese. In the Middle Ages it was a small but very active site where many artisans and merchants could trade safely as they were sheltered by the city walls, the remains of which can still be seen today. It was during this period that clergy, aristocrats and the wealthy bourgeoisie competed to surpass each other’s investments in houses and churches. In the Eastern part of the city many incredible monuments were discovered; this was a protected area where the refurbishment of important buildings had priority. There are many monuments that you should see when visiting Sarlat, including; Cathedral Saint-Sacerdos, home of la Boetie, the mansion of Gisson, Huize Chassaing, the hotel de la Mirandole, the lantern of death and more.
There is even a panoramic elevator, which gives you a 360 degrees view over Sarlat.
